Internet of Teeth

Monitoring is always been part of life whether be technical monitoring, Physical monitoring, Financial monitoring and many more. Monitoring in real time is what happens in and around our bodies can be invaluable in the context of health care or clinical studies, but not so easy to do. That could soon change thanks to new, miniaturized sensors developed by researchers at the Tufts University School of Engineering that, when mounted directly on a tooth and communicating wirelessly with a mobile device, can transmit information on glucose, salt and alcohol intake.

Internet of teeth is 2x2mm wireless sensors which can be mounted on to the teeth and can tracks what goes into your mouth. It monitors salts, glucose and alcohol intake. All the data of food intake will collected and send to mobile devices with the help of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification). The sensors are made up of three sandwiched layers: a central “bioresponsive” layer that absorbs the nutrient or other chemicals to be detected, and outer layers consisting of two square-shaped gold rings. Their is a sheet of thin gold foil electrodes, an atom-thick layer of graphite known as Graphene and a layer of specially engineered peptides, chemical structures that sense by binding to parts of their cell membranes. Together, the three layers act like a tiny antenna, collecting and transmitting waves in the radio frequency spectrum. When the signals are transmitted to the devices then some signals get absorbed and other get reflected back. The mechanism is similar to how chromatography works for chemical analysis where certain chemicals absorb light wavelengths of specific frequencies. Passing a calibrated light source through a gas column and observing the parts of the spectrum that get absorbed allows researchers to identify certain chemicals inside the column.

To detect and measure the nutrients and other analyses, sensors changes its color. If the central layer of the sensor detects salt or ethanol, thus its electrical will effect and shift, causing the sensor to absorb and transmit a different spectrum of radio frequency waves, with varying intensity. Since, this technology is based on “Tooth tattoos” therefore, sensors will work the same way. Sensors do not carry any onboard batteries, it must be both read and powered simultaneously through built-in antenna with radio waves, causing it to resonate electronically and send back information that the device then uses to determine intake of alcohol, salt, glucose and much more.

In future, it will monitor almost all type of nutrients and chemicals intake.

Advantages:

  • Sensor is direct connected with teeth, an ideal way to monitor health.

  • Will get daily update on intake of essential nutrients amount.

  • Also track when and where certain bacteria are present in mouth

  • It can detect deficiency of nutrients

  • Helps to detect severe diseases.

Disadvantages:

  • For different bacteria, chip should be modified accordingly

  • The prototype is bit too large for use in humans

  • Detects specific strains of bacteria.

  • Similar molecules that bond with one particular strain. Constructing those won’t be easy.
